Can you reduce anxiety in a short amount of time?

Writer: Tim D. Lynch, Ph. D.Tim D. Lynch, Ph. D.

Anxiety appears to have been prevalent throughout most of our lives, and often we are said to live in the age of anxiety. Probably most of us have been a student of history and I believe we would conclude that mankind has lived with anxiety from the very beginning of time.

I recall several years ago reading a research article about the significant effects of just a 1% increase in unemployment. It was quite amazing to review the numerous anxiety issues that were created for those men and women who lost their job. The figures were amazingly high noting the number of additional strokes and heart attacks, numerous illnesses, increase of medications

as well as alcohol use to manage anxiety and so many other ramifications that just appeared to multiply as the unemployment persisted.

We all have learned that being proactive is always much better than reactive when we deal with most any challenging situation, however, generally speaking we have not learned very well how to manage our anxiety. There is no doubt that anxiety on some level is part of life and that anyone who does not have anxiety is really probably "pushing up tulips"! The most effective way to manage our lives that have to deal with anxiety is to prepare before hand by learning relaxation techniques, stress management, or some form of meditation, all significantly contributing to our ability to manage our anxiety.

There are several relatively simple psychological techniques which are often understood as cognitive behavioral therapy, or other behavioral techniques which involve altering one’s thoughts and actions, and are relatively easy to learn prior to an upcoming anxiety provoking situation.

As a short-term, experienced Psychologist I can provide my training for a very short period of time with lifelong usefulness. If this is something I can help you with, please reach out!
